What Fence Types Last The Longest?

Finding the perfect fence for your property requires a lot of consideration to get it right. Fence materials, colors, designs and the level of security are all factors that you must take into consideration as well as making the fence look aesthetically pleasing around your home. Fitting a fence in to the architectural and aesthetic design of your home is important to retain value on the property, however the two most important factors you need to consider for your new fence are longevity and durability.

Of course, you want your fence to look great and add value to your property but understanding what fence materials last the longest should push you in the right direction for purchasing the perfect fence for your home.

Wood Fences

The most common fences are of course wooden fences. The most popular types of timber for fences are pine, cedar and spruce. The durability of your wooden fence is reliant on the type of wood you choose to build it with. Cedar fences can last up to 30 years, but the initial investment is high. Spruce is a mid-range priced fence, and lasts up to 10 years, and pine is the cheapest, and will most likely last around 5-10 years depending on the environment around you.

Treated timbers will increase longevity however, and pine and spruce may last up to 20 years if treated properly. With treatment, cedar can last up to 40 years. Depending on where you live, if your property sees a lot of moisture, timber fences will be prone to rot, cutting their lifespan dramatically. You can of course avoid this from happening by properly treating and coating your fence materials, however it may just be better value to use a different product if the area you live in is too wet. Wood fences also require regular maintenance, including painting or staining every three or four years, to keep them protected against the elements.

Metal Fences

Metal fences are the strongest option; however, they are also very expensive in comparison to other types of fencing. Steel fences are available in three common types, which are chain link, wrought iron and aluminum. Chain link is inexpensive but does not look that great. Wrought iron is very expensive but will last a very long time. Aluminum fences are also a great option and are available in many color options. Aluminum fencing requires little to no maintenance, however wrought iron fencing will require a regular coating of rust preventative to ensure a long life is achieved.

Vinyl Fences

Vinyl or PVC fencing are a relatively new option that is becoming very popular. Using a range of new and recycled materials, PVC fences are durable, long-lasting and low in maintenance. Although color options are limited, there is a good range of style options available, like lattice, privacy, picket and split-rail types.

So, Which Fence Type Lasts The Longest?

Depending on your budget and the desired aesthetic outcome for your property, the fence you choose will take a lot into account. Chain link fences will last up to 50 years, but they don’t look very nice. If it is aesthetic appeal you are after, and you can afford a higher budget, opting for aluminum, wrought iron or treated cedar will get you a long-life fence option. If you are looking for a mid-range priced fence with a few design options available, vinyl or PVC fencing is a great way to go.
